01.05.24 10:45 PM - By Talent

The D visa is an Austrian visa that entitles you to a stay of up to 6 months in the country, being ideal for people who have a short-term employment contract, such as seasonal workers, who only go to the country during the summer or winter seasons.

General information

Visa requests can only be made at most 3 months in advance , but it is recommended to request it at least 1 month before the trip . It is also important to remember that this visa can only be obtained in person at the embassy in Brasília , so also consider the travel and accommodation costs if you do not live in the city. Normally, applicants purchase their flights to Austria on the same night as their appointment at the embassy, or the following day, once the visa has been granted, they can board immediately.

This visa has a consular fee of €150 (approximately R$770.00 at current exchange rates). The amounts must be paid in reais and always in cash at the exchange rate updated in the request.

First Stage: Submission and Analysis of the Application to the Austrian Migration Agency (AMS)

The company is responsible for submitting your application to the Austrian Migration Agency, AMS. Documentation review and approval can take up to 4 weeks . In the meantime, you can now contact the embassy to make an appointment for your visa.

Second Stage: Submission of the D Visa Application to the Austrian Embassy

Once your application has been approved (AMS document issued) and a day has been scheduled for your visa, you must go to Brasília to request it in person with all the documentation in hand. It is very important that all documents are correct, as failure to obtain a visa may delay or even prevent you from going to Austria. Remember, your flight may depart the next day or the same night as your appointment.

Third Stage: Arrival in Austria

You must register as a resident in Austria within three working days of your arrival in the country. To do this, you must go to the Magistrat (municipal authority) or Gemeindeamt (municipal office) of your city with the documents listed below:

  • Identification document
  • Birth certificate
  • Registration form ( Meldezettel ). This document must be signed by both the landlord and tenant, and you can access it here.
  • You must report any change of address to the Magistrat/Gemeindeamt within three working days, and any change of other details within one month. You should keep your registration confirmation ( Meldebestätigung ) safe, as you will need it in different situations, such as to obtain or renew your residence permit. Also remember that before leaving Austria you have to cancel your registration.

Fourth Stage: Registration in Austria (Anmeldebescheinigung)

Once you have registered in the city where you will live, now it is time to register in Austria and issue the Anmeldebescheinigung. To do this, you must go to the local immigration authority, which could be the Bezirkshauptmannschaft or MA35, if you are in Vienna. Don't forget to take your Meldezettel, as well as the other required documents. Unlike the Meldezettel, the Anmeldebescheinigung is not free, it costs €15, and must be requested within 4 months of entering the country (however, we recommend that you do not wait and request it as soon as possible).

Final Stage: Candidate Registration and Start of Activities

The company is responsible for registering you as an employee with the competent authorities. Once this is done, and with all the documents and contract in hand, you are ready to start working, in addition to being able to benefit from free national insurance.
